October Home Maintenance Reminder: Smoke Alarms & Carbon Monoxide Detectors

When Daylight Savings Time ends on Sunday, November 5^th, Handyman Connection urges all homeowners to be sure they have inspected their smoke and carbon monoxide detectors for proper function.

According to the United States Fire Administration, an estimated 3,000 people die in residential fires each year, the majority of whom live in homes without a working smoke alarm. And according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 400 people die annually from carbon monoxide poisoning not linked to a fire. These deaths are tragic because they are preventable.

How to Maintain Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors

• Test detectors monthly using the test button to ensure the battery and sounder are operating properly.
• Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for maintenance to keep the alarm working well. These instructions can be found on the packaging or on the manufacturer’s website.
• Check batteries every six months, and change the batteries once a year (if applicable). If the unit chirps, warning that the battery is low, replace it right way. Never disable a smoke alarm.
• The sound of an alarm can be scary. Make sure everyone in your home understands what the alarm means and knows how to respond. Practice a home fire escape plan.
• Some smoke alarms contain a 10-year battery that is not replaceable. If the alarm chirps, warning that the battery is low, replace the entire unit right away.
• Regularly vacuum or blow out dust that accumulates in the unit and can affect the sensors. Never apply paint to a smoke or carbon monoxide detector.
• Carbon monoxide detectors usually wear out in 5-7 years. If there’s no expiration date on the unit or it’s more than seven years old, replace it now.
• Smoke detectors should be completely replaced every 10 years.
