When it comes to home renovations, it doesn’t take much to blow your remodeling budget out of the water. While it’s important to figure in a cushion of around 20% to cover unexpected expenses, according to experts, there are areas you can save on home renovation costs without compromising on what you want. While it you may not seem like you’re saving a lot in each particular area, all those little cuts can quickly add up to a tidy sum!
Let in the light naturally. Homes with a lot of natural light are a hot commodity, but the purchase of a new window and the corresponding labor that goes into installing it can be costly. A less expensive solution is to install a light tube. This handy tube is perfect for bringing light into areas that are windowless or tend to be dim, such as bathrooms and hallways. Simply slide it in between the rafters, and you’ll have natural sunlight channeling into your living space at a third of the cost of adding a new window.
Look for gently used building materials. If you insist on installing a window, check out your local Habitat for Humanity ReStore first. Not only can you find used windows in good shape, but also salvaged building materials such as light fixtures, sinks, vanities, countertops, appliances and more, all at a fraction of the cost of new materials. On the downside, many contractors won’t work with salvaged materials for liability reasons, but if you’re doing your own remodeling, the ReStore is an excellent option. Be sure to check sites such as Craigslist or Freecycle as well to find other homeowners who are selling or giving away used household goods and materials.
Roll up your sleeves and pitch in. While many homeowners don’t have the knowledge and expertise for certain aspects of a remodel, if you’re ready and willing to sweat a little, you can save a lot of money by doing certain tasks yourself. These include things like demolition, sanding and insulating. You can also help with cleanup rather than paying someone else to do it.
Stick with the same or similar layout. If at all possible, don’t move the kitchen sink. Or the stove. Or the toilet. Moving drain, gas and plumbing lines is extremely expensive and can take a big chunk out of your remodeling budget. In fact, it could cost you up to $1,000 just to move a sink more than three feet!
