Tips to Organize a Small Garage

• Make a plan. As with any project, it’s never a good idea to go in without a plan. When preparing to organize your garage, you should first visualize what you want the finished project to look like, then come up with a plan for making it happen. Decide what you need to purchase, such as storage containers or shelving units, lay out the steps you need to follow and come up with a timeline that you think will work for you. Remember that sorting, clearing things out and organizing takes time, so don’t be afraid to space the project out over several days if necessary.
• Use heavy-duty storage. Cardboard boxes and flimsy shelving won’t cut it if you’re serious about organizing. Purchase solid, heavy-duty shelving units and sturdy bins with lids that can be easily stacked to store items you don’t use very often. For families that are into sports, one clever idea involves stretching bungee cords along the sides of a metal shelving unit to corral balls and other sports equipment while still allowing for easy access.
• Organize tools on the wall. To free up more room in your garage, install a slat wall or pegboard wall where you can hang tools and use hooks to hang baskets for small accessories. You can even make outlines of individual tools to ensure they always make it back to the right spot.
• Give your storage wheels. Everyone has electrical access panels and outlets in the garage that require quick access, which makes it hard to store anything in front of them – taking away valuable storage space. Instead of just giving up that space, invest in a rolling storage shelf that can easily be moved when needed.
