Let’s Talk About Exterior Doors

Did you know that installing a new exterior entry door can virtually pay for itself by increasing the value of your home? A new entry door delivers valuable curb appeal to potential home buyers. If you’re house is not on the market, an elegant new entry door makes an inviting impression on friends and family as they arrive. Ready to go buy a new door? YES! Ready to install that door yourself? NO! Well, we are! Call Handyman Connection of Ann Arbor when you’ve picked out your beautiful new entry door and we’ll handle the installation.

While the styles of exterior doors are plentiful, there are 3 main materials for door composition. Let’s review those materials and their benefits below:

Steel doors are relatively low cost and are slightly a stronger barrier against intruders compared to fiberglass and wood. The lifespan of a steel door is shorter than wood or fiberglass. If you live near a body of salt water or in an area of high humidity, a steel door isn’t the best choice. Dents can occur in steel doors with heavy use and are difficult to repair.

Fiberglass doors fall into the mid-range in terms of cost, and come in many styles and can be crafted to mimic the look of real wood. While no door material is completely free of maintenance, fiberglass comes pretty close. These doors can last about twice as long as a wood or steel door. Fiberglass doors hold up well in changing weather conditions, as they don’t expand or contract like a wood door. Fiberglass doors do feel lightweight, but its coating is strong and secure.

Wood can be considered the king of materials for entry doors. It is the costliest if these 3 materials, requires the most maintenance and is typically seen on very high-end homes. Wood doors are substantial in weight, and deliver an elegance unmatched by steel or fiberglass doors. While it does require the most maintenance, it is much easier to repair than steel or fiberglass. Be prepared to refinish a wood door approximately every 2 years to prevent damage that changing weather conditions and moisture can cause.

We hope we’ve helped you in deciding on a new exterior entry door. When the time comes to install, contact  Handyman Connection of Ann Arbor for your free, no-obligation estimate!
