How to Become your own Professional Painter!

Once you have lived in your home for a while, painting is one of the most inexpensive ways to freshen up a room when the walls that surround you become tiresome. While it is a great weekend DIY project, you cannot just slap some paint on the wall and hope that it will look good. Handyman Connection of Calgary has some painting tips and tricks that you can follow to ensure your paint job turns into a professional job.

Painting Preparation:

If your existing walls are quite damaged and require holes to be filled, use a putty knife to fill them with spackle. If there are any areas that have peeling paint, remove this with the knife as well to create a smoother surface. Once your walls are smooth, ensure you sand the whole area anyways to create a flawless look on your walls. Use 120-grit sandpaper and sand from top down to even out the surface and allow the paint to adhere better.  Primer is usually quite important, particularly if you are going from dark to light or light to dark. Make sure you cover all windows, doors and furniture with plastic to protect them during your painting.

Draw up your Plan:

Once you start painting, always start at the top and work your way down. If doing the ceilings, start there and then go one wall at a time from top down. Most walls require two coats so use a roller with the appropriate nap thickness. If your wall has any texture on it, use the thickest nap possible to fill all the areas. When it’s time for the brush work, only dip it in the can of paint one-third of the way to ensure you have plenty of paint for the whole job and it will do a world of difference when cleaning the brush and there is no paint right at the top of the bristles.

Complete the Trim:

Do not start on the trim until the walls are completely dry. First tape the wall-trim edge using a putty knife to create a seal that will keep the paint from getting through. Once the trim is painted, remove the painters tape carefully but don’t wait too long. The paint will start to dry and stick and peel off with the tape.

Cleanup:

Take a look at your work! You should now have a professional, quality painting project completed by your own hands. Clean the brushes and roller covers under warm, soapy water or use a cleaning solvent if an oil based paint was applied. Brushes are to be reshaped and hung to dry while roller covers should be dried in an upright position. Once these are dry, they will be ready for a second use.
