Dry rot and wood rot can be a great risk to your home if left untreated and unrealized. Every year you or a professional craftsperson should be checking your home for signs of these afflictions to make sure your home is in tip-top condition. Learn about the difference between these rots and how they can be identified and treated in your home.
Dry rot is a fungal infection that rots up to large areas of wood. These affected sections will need to be removed and replaced to stop the rot. The dry rot can be identified by an odor, damaged timber, decaying timber that breaks or is brittle, there are orange spores, grey colored lines in the wood, and even growths. This is a very serious problem and can be prevented if the timber in your home is pretreated with a fungicide.
Check for wood rot in areas susceptible to moisture such as the basement, bathroom, wet rooms, crawl spaces, siding, exterior doors, and windows. Odor, swelling, discoloring, or wood that is easily punctured are all signs of rot. These areas will need to be dried out and then sealed with borate or copper wood preservative. Consider installing an exhaust fan in the bathroom, a dehumidifier in the basement, and do not allow any standing water on your deck or wood surfaces outside after it rains to prevent rot.
Now knowing the differences of wood rot and dry rot, mark a day on your calendars to check your home yearly for these problems. If you have any questions or find a problem in your home, call your local craftspeople to get it checked and repaired before the damage can spread.
