Babies are naturally curious about their surroundings – and this exploration aids in their learning and development. By baby-proofing your home, you can make sure kids can explore their surroundings safely. Where should you start?
The sharp, angular edges on your furniture might scrape your toddler’s while they’re learning to walk. Contractors recommend covering them with baby corner guards to protect your toddler from cuts and scapes.
While learning to walk, toddlers tend to grab onto nearby objects for support, which can be risky if they’re holding on to top-heavy furniture, such as drawers and cabinets. That’s why contractors recommend parents bolt furniture like these to the wall to keep them steady.
There’s a chance your toddler might wander off on their own and reach the staircase, which should be fenced off to prevent accidental slips and falls. Child safety gates are recommended for toddlers aged between 6 and 24 months. These gates are bolted to the wall near the top of the staircase. Most contractors wouldn’t recommend pressure-mounted gates for babies in this range as they’re easier to dislodge. Unlike hardware-mounted safety gates, pressure gates are attached to the walls by pressing them against the doorframe or walls and are, therefore, less secure.
Parents should also lock up low-lying cabinets used to store toxic chemicals, such as cleaning solutions and laundry detergent. For extra security and peace of mind, it’s best to use childproof locks on all of your cabinets.
Keep your kids’ fingers from getting pinched by installing a doorstop or door holder near door hinges.
Don’t forget to cover electrical sockets with safety covers. For more baby-proofing tips, ask an experienced contractor.
