Home Decorating Mistakes to Avoid in this New Year

Still thinking about a resolution for this year? Why not change up your home décor in 2019 and make your house desirable! January can be tight on the budget but even a new paint color can change things up in your home and bring a way to breathe new life into your new year. Before you jump into your ideas, Handyman Connection of Kelowna wants to ensure you avoid these home decorating mistakes so you don’t accidentally sabotage your design.

Knick-Knack Overboard – Everyone has that one store where you want your living room to look exactly like their store front design, but a little goes a long way when decorating with their items. While you may love all their accents and accessories, limit yourself to only a few key pieces that are your favorite. Try and vary the size and height of your choices to display a balanced look. Not only will too many accessories make your space seem cluttered, but the dusting will be a nightmare!

Patterns Mix-Match – When you want to brighten and liven up a room, throw pillows, rugs and curtains are the perfect way to do so. Since these pieces bring the most interest into a room, stick with the rule to use no more than three fabric patterns at a time. Pick one piece that you want to be the center of attention to anchor the room and then add one or two patterns along with the solid prints for the rest to ensure your room doesn’t seem too busy.

Furniture Overload – If you have a space without too much furniture and it flows nicely, it may be best to keep it that way. When you cram too much furniture into one room, it will just make it feel smaller, not stylish. If this is your problem right now, identify your favorite pieces and try to repurpose the others to a different area. A great way to get some extra cash in the tight January month is to sell some of the unused items but if you cannot seem to get rid of any just yet, try passing it off to another family member.
