Interior painting is an excellent DIY project that can instantly liven up your room. Most amateur paint jobs, however, are crude, usually left with telltale signs of paint spatter, missed spots, or mottled color. Handyman Connection of Lincoln shares some handy tips to help you prepare your room to achieve professional results.
Remove Any Wall Hangings
While others opt to save time by leaving their paintings on the wall and then painting around them, all it takes is one slight movement from your painting and your cut corner would be exposed. Cutting around your wall hangings actually consumes more time than removing them, and you risk damaging your decor as well. With that in mind, we recommend taking everything off your wall first before painting the surface. Keep these items protected by using bubble wrap and keeping them in storage bins.
Painting your wall is also a great chance to reconfigure your wall’s design. Simply remove your old nails and picture hangers, then fill the holes with spackle before painting. Make sure the spackle is even and dried before you start painting.
Make Sure to Clean the Walls
Now you may question the need for this step. After all, who’s going to see the dirt once you’ve painted over it? This is important because clean, uniform surfaces help ensure smooth and professional-looking results. Besides, dark smudges and other substances on your wall can show through paint and change its consistency.
We recommend cleaning your walls with a mixture of water and mild detergent. If there are any tough stains or smudges such as grease or soot, a solution of bleach and trisodium phosphate can do the trick. Regardless of the cleaning solution you use, be sure to thoroughly rinse the wall and give them enough time to dry before working. Additionally, you can use fans to speed up the drying process.
