Dry rot and wood rot can be a serious problem in your home if it is not looked for or goes on too long without repairs. Water damage, moisture build-up, dry rot spores, and more can damage your home. If you are unsure where to begin or how to look for and repair these situations, keep on reading to discover our handymen’s recommendations.
Common areas for moisture build-up and places such as perimeter wood, the crawlspace, and both walls and floors around tubs, showers, and sinks are susceptible to damage. Every year before winter sets in, go through your home checking all these locations. Be on the lookout for swelling, discolored wood, odors, and more. Dry rot specifically is brittle and has cracked as the wood breaks apart.
A replacement would require fixing where the moisture is coming in and then letting the wood dry out. A dehumidifier will help this process along. Once dry, seal it with a copper or borate-based wood preservative. Be sure to check back on this location to make sure no more moisture is coming in.
Caulk all cracks, windows, exterior doors, and more. Remove old caulk once it begins breaking apart. Clean out your gutters on a regular basis, install an exhaust fan in the bathrooms, and have a dehumidifier in the basement to prevent moisture buildup. If it rains, clear all standing water from your deck.
Take control of your home and be on the lookout for possible areas for dry rot and moisture buildup. This is essential to keeping up the health of your home and improving the quality of living. Local handymen are here to help if you need any assistance any step of the way.
