Preparing Your Room for a Fresh Paint Job

Adding a fresh layer of paint to a room is a surefire way to revitalize its look, but it can be a lot more difficult than you might expect if you don’t make the right preparations. Whether you’re hiring our pros for the job or you’re treating it as a DIY project, here are a few things that you can do to make sure your repainting project goes smoothly.

Get Rid of Clutter

Painting a room involves moving brushes, buckets and sometimes ladders or long tools. Working unhindered is nearly impossible if you have cabinets right next to the walls or chairs all over the place. Some of that paint can even get on your finely varnished furniture. Get everything you can move out of the room and put them back when the paint is dry.

Cover Stuff You Don’t Want Painted

Unless you want unsightly splotches on your floor ruining the rest of a freshly painted room, you need to have your floor covered. You don’t need large swaths of tarp to do the trick. You can use old newspapers, which are cheap and easy to dispose of when you’re done painting. You should also cover moldings and outlets with tape.

Prepare the Walls

Dust bunnies or chipped old paint can get painted over during the project, causing ugly bumps on the surface. You’d want to get rid of those by cleaning the walls with a sponge and detergent. This is especially important if you’re repainting the kitchen, where oil and grease stains on the wall must be completely stripped off. You should also have caulk on hand to fill and smooth out small cracks on the wall.

Plan Where the Paint Goes

We’re talking about the buckets of paint and the tools you’ll have to use. Instead of going back and forth to the garage to get another gallon of paint, consider setting up a staging area in one corner of the room. This not only helps speed up the painting process but also keeps you from accidentally leaving a trail of paint all over the place.
