The Proper Way to Organize the Closet

Organizing the closet and keeping it that way is not as easy as it sounds. There’s often not a lot of time for you to do it, between your job and other responsibilities. That said, when you do have time to do it, you need to organize it the right way.

In this post, Handyman Connection® of Butler-Warren discusses the proper way to organize any kind of closet.

The Staging Area

Start by setting up a staging area where you can freely empty out your closet. We recommend a cleared-out part of the room, a desk, chair or even the bed itself. Remove everything from the closet from the clothes to the little separating boxes and arrange them in your staging area.

Organizing the Closet

Once you’re done taking everything out in your closet, it’s time to organize and categorize the items. It’s always a good idea to separate your indoor and outdoor clothes, along with your underwear, but those are not the only ones you need to organize. As you’re sifting through your clothes, separate the old clothes and things that shouldn’t be in your closet in the first place. The latter will help you reduce the clutter in your closet considerably.

Eliminating the Unnecessary

Now that you’ve separated your clothes and other stuff, it’s time to get rid of all the unnecessary items in your closet. Get rid of knick-knacks, toys and old clothing. For the latter, you don’t need to throw them away; you can sell them in a garage sale, donate them or give them to your friends and family.

Clean the Closet

Before you put the clothes back, you want to give the closet a good cleaning up. Dirt and debris aren’t just unsightly, they also clutter up the closet and make it difficult to store your clothes. On top of that, they ruin otherwise clean clothing too. Once that’s done, you just need to return them as you’ve found them.

Do this at least once every month and we’re sure your closet will stay clean and organized every time.
