Sustainable building materials have undoubtedly become more than just a trend. In terms of flooring materials, this gives homeowners not just the opportunity to create an eco-friendly home, but also a greater range of materials to choose from. 1. Bamboo. The bamboo tree typically matures within three to five years, which means it’s a lot easier to replenish compared to other trees. As a flooring material, bamboo offers the traditional grained look of hardwood and works well with virtually any stain and sealant. When sourcing bamboo, it’s important to consider its environmental impact if it’s sourced from tropical regions.
2. Cork. Most people think of cork as the material for bottle stoppers, coasters and notice boards. But cork is a great choice for flooring because it has some “give,” which makes it more comfortable to stand on for extended periods. Cork is harvested from the bark of the cork oak tree, which regrows every few years.
3. Linoleum. Linoleum flooring has been in use as a flooring material for over a century, and it remains in use as an affordable flooring option. Made from natural materials such as jute, linseed oil and tree resin, linoleum is biodegradable, recyclable and typically lasts between 20 to 40 years.
4. Reclaimed wood. Reclaimed wood is among the most eco-friendly flooring options because it’s sourced from existing buildings, old furniture and timber from discarded framing. Make it a point to choose a reputable supplier, as reclaimed materials may have been exposed to chemicals, insects or mold.
5. Concrete. If properly mixed and installed, concrete flooring can last indefinitely. It is also one of the most abundant materials on the planet, as well as resistant to rot and mold growth. If you are including the manufacturing process as part of your building’s carbon footprint, concrete may not necessarily be on the top of your list because of the energy it uses up during manufacture. However, its exceptionally long life span may help offset its impact on the environment.
