Hardwood floors are not only beautiful, but they can also last for decades—some even have service lives spanning centuries. However, like any part of your home, they do require ample care and maintenance if you want to maximize their potential.
In this post, Handyman Connection of McKinney lists three signs that your hardwood floors need sanding and refinishing.
1. Scratched Surfaces
Your hardwood floors will inevitably get scratched over the course of their service life, but scratches that go through the stain are a sign that you need to refinish the surface of the hardwood floor. These scratches are unsightly and often appear “deep.” Additionally, they tend to stand out when you have a darker stain.
2. Graying Surfaces
If a patch of your hardwood flooring has turned (or is turning) gray, this is a clear sign you need to refinish your floors. They turn gray because their polyurethane has worn off and is absorbing moisture. Failure to address this will cause your floors to turn black, which will eventually require full replacement.
3. Discolorations
Ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun can damage your hardwood floors. You can tell your floors are sun-damaged if the surface looks discolored or mismatched. Too much sun damage will eventually cause the colors to fade entirely! Thankfully, you can address this simply by sanding and refinishing the surface, bolstering its resistance to UV light in the process.
