After deciding on the brand of paint and the shade you want for your space, the next decision to make is the paint finish. Each type of paint finish has its pros and cons. Additionally, some paint finishes work better for specific spaces or lifestyles. Here is a tutorial on paint finishes from the team at Handyman Connection. We provide professional painting services in Mississauga so your room has a clean, gorgeous look.
The most common type of paint finish that may be in a home is flat paint. Flat paint covers the walls and doesn’t reflect any light back into the room. Without shine, the paint’s colours can be more vibrant and help cover more flaws in your room’s walls and ceilings.
Flat paint is a good choice for large spaces that don’t get a lot of traffic, such as the ceiling and higher walls. A downside to flat paint is that it can get scuffed pretty easily. Scuff marks in flat paint are difficult to remove unless you paint over them.
The next type of finish you may consider is matte paint. Matte paint has more sheen than flat, but it still doesn’t reflect a lot of light. There is approximately five to nine percent gloss in matte paint so it is easier to wipe off when it gets marked.
Matte is a good option if you want the look of a rich shade of flat paint but with more durability. Matte paints can be perfect for bold colours in the bedroom, office, dining room or formal living room. Over time, frequent cleaning of matte paint may begin to wear the colour away, so high-traffic areas may not be suitable for this finish.
Paint shades also come in glossy finishes that can enhance the details in your walls, trim and ceiling. If you want some gloss, you can choose a paint with a semi-gloss finish. This means there is 41 to 69 percent gloss in the formula. It gives your rooms a bit of extra shine and more durability.
If you want to take the glossy sheen even further, go with a high-gloss finish for your space. High-gloss has 70 to 89 percent gloss and leaves a shiny look on the walls. This makes it easy to wipe off in rooms that get a lot of wear and tear, such as a child’s room or a playroom.
For a non-glossy paint that still offers a bit of sheen, consider using a satin finish. Satin paint is an excellent choice for rooms that get a lot of use, such as the living room, kitchen or bedroom. Its sheen also makes it ideal for walls that need to be wiped down a lot.
Satin finishes, like glossy and other finishes with sheen, may not hide the imperfections on the walls or ceilings as well as flat or matte paint. Satin is best used for light-coloured walls that are large and not damaged.
