Choosing The Right Deck Design For Your Home In Regina

The right deck design for your home

The prospect of deck installation in Regina is exciting. Decks are built primarily for relaxation and enjoyment, and it is fun to think about all the good times you will have once it is complete. When it comes to designing a deck, there are many different options available to you, which can also be exciting but can also be overwhelming. To help you narrow down your choices, here are some things to take into consideration when deciding on the design of your new deck.

1. Intended Use

It’s probably a given that you intend to use your deck for recreation, but you need to get more specific than that. Do you intend to use it for private family gatherings or for large neighbourhood parties? In the former case, you probably want a smaller deck, perhaps with a trellis for privacy. In the latter case, you probably want a bigger deck, and you may want stairs leading down to the backyard to make sure that your guests have plenty of room to spread out.

Regardless of how you intend to use your deck, you need enough room to seat everybody and to accommodate whatever else you need, such as a grill.

2. Height

If you intend to build the deck to come off the second floor of your home, you obviously need to plan a raised deck. This is also a good option if your backyard has a steep slope or if your home’s main level is built above grade. If you do have a raised deck, you have to be sure to have reliable railings to prevent falls and keep everybody safe.

If your lot is level and the main level of your home is not above grade, you may prefer a platform deck that is built low to the ground. A platform deck is more accessible and can accommodate more people. While you may still need safety railings to prevent tripping, a fall from a platform deck is unlikely to result in serious injury. Therefore, it may be a better choice for families with young children.

3. Number of Levels

You do not have to choose only one level for your deck. Some homes can support multi-level decks with stairs to connect the various levels. This is a way to add some visual interest. It can also keep outdoor activities organized, with each level dedicated to a different activity.

4. Plank Direction

The direction of the planks does not necessarily affect the function of the deck, but it can affect its aesthetics. For example, you can add visual interest to your deck by having the planks go in a diagonal direction rather than perpendicular or parallel to the house.

5. Exposure To Sunlight

Some homeowners want a southern exposure so that the deck receives as much sunlight as possible. Others may find that direct sunlight makes the deck too hot and prefer that the deck be at least partly in the shade. If you plan to use the deck during the midday hours when the sun is hottest, you may want to consider having the deck built to receive less sunlight. However, if you plan to use your deck mostly in the evening, you may want to build it on the west side so that it gets as much sunlight as possible or on the south side so that it makes the most of the available light without forcing your guests to stare into the setting sun.
